Alberta’s decontamination protocol helps ensure the proper cleaning of watercraft and other equipment used in water to reduce the spread of aquatic invasive species and fish disease. The revised Decontamination Protocol will better protect Alberta waters by providing clear directions for realistic decontamination methods that can be applied by a wide range of users. It is important to have consistent direction on practices for cleaning of equipment after it has come in contact with water and before moving to different waters.

Description

In August 2017, the Government of Alberta Decontamination Protocol was introduced as a management strategy to reduce the spread of whirling disease and other aquatic invasive species and fish diseases. In 2018 Alberta Environment and Parks began work to expand the decontamination protocols to include industrial operations working in or near water in Alberta. A draft policy and tracking template were developed. This record contains the draft documents and background materials provided to elicit informed public feedback through an online survey and public information sessions during the Fall of 2018.

This manual provides consistent protocols for the inspection and cleaning of vehicles, watercraft, and water-based equipment, which will help prevent the spread of AIS during all field activities of government staff. The manual is accompanied by a quick reference guide, an equipment list, and a map of aquatic invasive species decontamination risk zone.
