The Indigenous Lake Monitoring Program (ILMP) was developed in response to Indigenous communities’ concerns about the quality of lakes of local importance as well as the Community-Based Monitoring & Knowledge teams’ mandate to explore opportunities to work together with Indigenous communities to advance environmental stewardship. The ILMP aims to support and enable stewardship and management of Alberta’s lakes based on the best available Indigenous and scientific knowledge. From 2016-21, staff from CBM&K, Watershed Sciences and Watershed Monitoring units within the Airshed & Watershed Stewardship Branch worked with community technicians from four First Nations (Bigstone Cree Nation, Cold Lake First Nations, Whitefish Lake First Nation, Dene Tha' First Nation) to collect and report on water chemistry, physical measurements, and biological samples on seven lakes in Northern Alberta. Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS) is a complex, chronic health condition associated with numerous symptoms, linked to low-level exposure to one or more chemicals. Significant gaps exist in the scientific understanding of MCS. Variability in observed symptoms and subsequent clinical diagnoses limit the certainty of population prevalence estimates. Alberta Health commissioned a literature review from a consultancy in the fields of toxicology and environmental assessment to understand the current state of science related to MCS.

The report summarizes observed climatic changes across Canada and Alberta. It briefly discusses the causes of climate change and the methodology for the detection and causal attribution of long-term trends and changes in the frequency or intensity of extreme events. The report summarizes observed and projected changes for more than 30 climate indicators, from the temperature of the coldest day of the year to average precipitation during the growing season. Future simulations are generated using a set of global climate models from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project version 5 (CMIP5), under higher (RCP8.5) and lower (RCP4.5) emissions scenarios, statistically downscaled to a high-resolution grid covering the entire province, and to 21 weather stations in Alberta. Local changes in the climate indicators are scaled to global mean temperature increases of +1, +1.5, and +2, +3 and +4OC.

Description

This report documents the assessment of the performance of the GIS-based method used to evaluate the intactness of riparian habitats along the shorelines of Pigeon, Gull, Sylvan, and Buffalo lakes and their associated tributaries. Both desktop and field validation methods were used and the ability of the GIS assessment approach to capture relative differences in intactness locally and regionally was tested. Overall the method proved to be reliable for assessing and comparing the intactness of riparian management areas across large geographical areas.

The results of the riparian and land cover assessment are summarized and visualized, including a summary of habitat change within riparian management areas through time. Includes documentation of the GIS modelling and analysis methods including recommendations for minimum data standards and validation procedures.

Reports on a Carbon Capture and Storage project to remove carbon dioxide from the process gas streams of the three hydrogen-manufacturing units which are a part of the Scotford Upgrader infrastructure. The Scotford Upgrader is owned by the Athabasca Oil Sands Project, a joint venture operated by Shell and owned by Shell, Chevron Canada Corporation, and Marathon Oil Sands LP. The Upgrader is part of Shell’s Scotford facility located northeast of Edmonton.

Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development retained ENVIRON International Corporation and Novus Environmental Inc. to conduct regional air quality modelling to support South Saskatchewan regional planning, as well as to provide a better understanding of potential air quality issues in the South Saskatchewan Region. The Community Multiscale Air Quality Modelling system was used to predict air pollution concentrations for the 2006-2008 and 2020, 2050 future years at 36, 12 and 4 km resolutions.
