Description

This Seniors, Community and Social Services (SCSS) dataset describes the monthly Income Support caseload in Alberta, including two client groups: those Expected to Work (ETW) and those who have Barriers to Full Employment (BFE). Income Support provides financial benefits to individuals and families who do not have the resources to meet their basic needs, like food, clothing, and shelter. The caseload is defined as the number of households categorized as ETW or BFE during a specific reporting period. Most commonly, this is reported as the average volume for a specific period (e.g., annually).   The composition of the caseload is made up of single individuals, lone-parent families, couples with children and couples without children. This Seniors, Community and Social Services (SCSS) dataset describes the monthly Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) caseload in Alberta. The AISH program provides financial and health benefits to eligible adult Albertans with a permanent medical condition that prevents them from earning a living.   Caseloads are reported as the actual volume each month and by the Alberta government’s fiscal year. Depending on an individual’s situation, some AISH benefits may also be provided for a spouse or partner and dependent children.   Monthly caseloads are also shown as a portion of the entire Alberta population; and by gender, age, primary medical condition, family composition, employment participation and six service delivery regions across the province.   For locations of AISH delivery regions, choose the Alberta Seniors, Community and Social Services Regions Map within the Resources section.

This Children and Family Services dataset provides an overview of the number of children and youth receiving post-intervention support through Transition to Adulthood Program (TAP) Agreements, by Indigenous status (Indigenous and Non-Indigenous). Young adults aged 18 to 24 who were previously involved with child intervention may be eligible for ongoing supports through TAP Agreements. TAP Agreements are based on the identified need of the young adult and can include financial support as well as support for housing, education, access to health services, vocational skills development, life skills mentoring, and connections to community and/or family members in order to support their successful transition to adulthood.   The data shows the average monthly number of Indigenous and non-Indigenous young adults in the province who were receiving post-intervention support through a TAP Agreement with historical information dating back ten years.   TAP was implemented in the...

Biomonitoring provides a measure of internal doses of environmental chemicals or agents and allows for a more accurate measure of human health risk from these exposures. In these Alberta Biomonitoring Program datasets, information was collected as part of 3 province-wide studies investigating the serum levels of environmental chemicals (both natural and synthetic) in pregnant women in northern, central and southern Alberta (Phase 1), in children in southern Alberta (Phase 2), and maternal and umbilical cord blood samples from 7 Alberta cities (Phase 3). The goals of the program are to create a benchmark against which to track future exposures, provide a starting point for assessing health risks, indicate possible exposure sources and prioritize research efforts. Chemicals targeted for monitoring were selected using expert guidance and review of similar studies. Cyanobacteria (also referred to as blue-green algae) are common photosynthetic bacteria that live in surface waters. Under favorable conditions, such as warm water and high nutrient content, these bacteria can form nuisance “blooms”. The presence of blooms in recreational water causes unpleasant aesthetics and exposure to some toxin-producing blooms may pose potential health risks. Contact with blooms can cause skin rashes and irritation, itchy eyes, and ear infections. Inhaling water may cause allergic-like reactions, runny noses or sore throats. Ingestion of toxins can cause a range of symptoms (e.g., hepatotoxic or neurotoxic effects, and even death). There has been increased public awareness as a result of research over the past 20 years, recent monitoring efforts, and increased public education on the topic. This document focuses on Tier 1 soil and groundwater remediation guidelines, the process used to develop them, and the manner in which they should be applied. Alberta's framework for the management of contaminated sites is designed to achieve three policy outcomes: pollution prevention, health protection, and productive use. Under this framework, three management options are provided: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Exposure Control. Tier 1 remediation guidelines are generic; that is, they are developed to protect sites at the more sensitive end of the range and can therefore be used at most sites without modification.

Alberta's framework for the management of contaminated sites is designed to achieve three policy outcomes: pollution prevention, health protection, and productive use. Under this framework, three management options are provided: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Exposure Control. Under Tier 2 it may be possible to screen out certain exposure pathways and/or modify the Tier 1 guidelines on the basis of site conditions. This companion document describes how the Tier 2 approach might be used to develop remediation objectives for a site.
