Description

This dataset accompanies Open File Report 2009-02. Between 1971 and 1983, the Alberta Research Council created a series of hydrogeological maps of Alberta. The geologists examined the sediment types present and used existing water well information to assign yield values to distinct zones within the mapped areas. They also looked at the materials, generally to a depth of 305 metres (1000 feet) below ground surface, and added the yields of the sediments encountered within this interval to arrive at a yield value for the whole. Alberta Geological Survey compiled the shapefiles for the yield polygons, digitized by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Agency, and then digitized the remaining linework for the remaining map areas. Afterwards, we created a geodatabase of the yield polygons for the entire province and assigned yield values to the polygons based on the original maps. We also assigned the most likely formation name, age and lithology to the yield polygon.

Alberta Geological Survey created a coal and coalbed methane (CBM) database to capture and manage CBM data. The database compiles different sources and contains information on 7923 wells (15,200 formation picks, 37,357 coal picks, 495 coal analyses and 363 vitrinite reflectance measurements). From this parent dataset, individual coal zone was evaluated. This record describes the Mannville coal zone net coal thickness.

Description

This GIS dataset is a compilation of existing surficial map information for Alberta, edited for mapping continuity and generalized to make it suitable for presentation and use at 1:1,000,000 scale. It is the dataset used to create Alberta Geological Survey Map 601: Surficial Geology of Alberta. The data were prepared from an intermediate dataset (Alberta Geological Survey DIG 2013-0001), which was edgematched and then the boundaries between similar polygons were 'dissolved.' The residual dataset was then generalized selectively using the Geological Survey of Canada's GeoScaler software. We then added attributes describing the generalized polygons, including unit description, texture, genetic group, and geological age. The data were created as an Esri file geodatabase feature class and exported for public distribution as an Esri shapefile called Surf1M_py_ll.shp. The layer file Surf1M_py_ll.lyr is also included for the convenience of Esri software users (version 9.2).

The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks for the formations that comprise the Beaverhill Lake Group (Townships 29 to 113, Ranges 1W4 to 13W6) made from wireline geophysical well logs. The dataset also includes picks for the underlying Elk Point Group, and the overlying Woodbend Group. Lithostratigraphic picks for the Beaverhill Lake Group include the Fort Vermilion Formation, the Swan Hills Formation, the Slave Point Formation, and the Waterways Formation (top of the Beaverhill Lake Group). Lithostratigraphic picks for the underlying Elk Point Group include the Prairie Evaporite Formation, the Sulphur Point Formation, and the Watt Mountain Formation (base of the Beaverhill Lake Group). Lithostratigraphic picks for the overlying Woodbend Group include the Cooking Lake Formation, or its equivalent.

Since its inception in 1920, the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) has drilled several thousand boreholes across the province. Most were drilled only into the unconsolidated sediments overlying the top of bedrock. In 2010, AGS staff began a project to systematically compile all of the borehole log information into a database. This Digital Data product and its companion Open File Report, OFR 2014-06 are the interim results of this initiative. The dataset comprises three tables: Sources.txt, Boreholes.txt and Intervals.txt, as well as metadata. The Sources table gives summary information about the AGS project for which each borehole was drilled. The Boreholes table gives summary information about each borehole, such as location, drilling method, date, and total depth of the hole. The Intervals table gives descriptive geological information about each distinct geological horizon encountered in the borehole, including lithology and colour of the material. This GIS dataset portrays the distribution of glacial landforms in Alberta, based on the compilation of existing government survey mapping and research literature, supplemented by new analysis of remote sensing data. It is the dataset that was used to create Alberta Geological Survey Map 604 (Glacial Landforms of Alberta) using an intermediate step of reducing the density of closely spaced line segments to make the features suitable for map production at 1:1 000 000 scale. This dataset contains the original line features without any cartographic generalization. The data were created in geodatabase format and output for public distribution in shapefile format.

This GIS dataset represents a reclassification of existing surficial map information for the purpose of portraying the distribution of sand and gravel deposits in Alberta. The surficial geology of Alberta ungeneralised digital mosaic (Alberta Geological Survey DIG2013-0001) represents the primary source of information used in this reclassification. This dataset was updated with more recently published 1:100,000 scale surficial geology maps, and where appropriate new polygon features that were digitized from line features in the Glacial Landforms of Alberta (Alberta Geological Survey Map 604 and DIG2014-0022). The updated surficial geology mosaic was then reclassified using a thematically-based attribute table which categorizes the original surficial geology features based on their sand and gravel component. This dataset evaluates the sandstone-hosted uranium potential of Alberta. An Alberta Geological Survey database of oil and gas well logs were queried to identify wells with gamma values greater than 300 API (American Petroleum Institute units). An algorithm written for this analysis queried more than 48 000 gamma ray logs from more than 22 000 wells. Of those, 11 476 readings greater than 300 API, within the upper 500 metres, were found in 6176 wells. We selected 1318 wells, verified the anomaly and determined rock types using a combination of gamma, density and resistivity logs. This dataset is associated with Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2009-0012.
