Description

This companion document to "Changing our Future: Alberta's Cancer Plan to 2030" provides additional information on the current services provided by Alberta's cancer care system, and the challenges the system faces. It also describes the elements critical to providing high quality cancer care - prevention, screening, diagnosis and treatment, research and the workforce. Finally it outlines the performance measures which will be used to determine whether the system is successfully achieving the strategies and actions identified in the Plan.

Description

Changing Our Future: Alberta's Cancer Plan to 2030 is a long-term, strategic plan for creating a high performing system of excellence for cancer care and prevention within the province. The Plan identifies current challenges and describes the transformative shifts needed by 2030 to realize Alberta's vision of becoming a place where most cancers are prevented, more cases of cancer are cured, and the suffering of people affected by cancer is dramatically reduced. The Plan provides a comprehensive planning framework for ongoing development of programs, activities and services related to cancer.

This is the final evaluation report describing the progress and outcomes of the Alberta Provincial Stroke Strategy (APSS). The evaluation was designed to generate information to support improved stroke care and ensure quality services are in place for Albertans. Topics covered include: history and milestones of the APSS; educating Albertans about stroke; reducing stroke occurrence and mortality; improving access to care; and improving health care system efficiency and satisfaction with care. Also includes recommendations in each of the topics discussed.

The 10-Year Plan to Strengthen Health Care is an agreement developed in 2004 between all provinces, territories and the federal government to ensure that Canadians have access to essential health care services when they need it. While the agreement is focused on five key areas of access (cancer, heart, diagnostic imaging, joint replacement and sight restoration), it also covers strategic investments in a number of areas that support improved access to health services, such as home care, prescription drugs, health promotion and disease prevention, primary health care, and health professions. This report shows the progress Alberta has made in implementing key strategies to date.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is the leading cause of preventable birth defects and one of the leading causes of developmental delay in children in Canada. The Physicians for FASD Prevention project, whose findings are presented in this report, provided valuable insight into the disparities between research findings and recommendations for FASD screening and prevention, and the realities of primary care physicians providing those services in every day clinical practice. This project attempted to develop and implement supports for physicians to improve FASD screening and prevention services they deliver to all women of childbearing age.

These protocols are based on the recommendations of the Tuberculosis Committee of the Canadian Thoracic Society and the opinions of local and national experts in tuberculosis diagnosis, treatment and control.

The Alberta-Wide Diabetes Forum, held November 4 to 6, 1999, offered stakeholders the opportunity to discuss the issues, challenges and barriers they face concerning diabetes management and care. The Forum also provided the participants with the opportunity to make some recommendations for changes needed in Alberta to address diabetes as a major public health concern. This report presents a summary of the forum proceedings and lists the six recommendations that were put forward to government as a result of the forum’s discussions.
