Description

The intent of this riparian health inventory is to provide a "state of the environment" report to area managers and the surrounding community. Combining this information with existing practical knowledge of resources will provide the best alternatives for sustaining healthy riparian areas within Cooking Lake – Blackfoot Grazing, Wildlife and Provincial Recreation Area.

This report evaluates aerial videography as a method for assessing the condition of riparian areas along rivers and streams in southern Alberta. Scoring results are given for 18 separate reaches in the Bow River basin near Calgary, and in the Oldman River basin west of Highway 2. The report contains a description of the methods used, maps showing the reaches flown, and an indexed set of DVDs containing the raw aerial video footage.

This report was commissioned by Alberta Environment and provides a qualitative estimate of the relative ecological status and indicates the sustainability of current conditions and practices within individual reaches of each sub-basin in the South Saskatchewan River Basin. The purpose of the initiative was to derive a sense of the integrity of the aquatic ecosystem in the basin and its sub-basins.
