Description

A low power FM radio broadcast transmitter was installed along Hwy 43 near Valleyview in December 1998, to demonstrate how a Highway Advisory Radio system could aid in warning travellers of inclement road and weather conditions as well as construction or maintenance activities. The tested system had a range of 8 km. The local maintenance contractor provided the personnel to record and update the messages.

Description

Several vehicle rollovers occurred during the first 48 months of service of the Highway 2/3 interchange near Fort Macleod. Fluorescent yellow green (FYG) retroreflective sheeting product was subsequently installed at the interchange, and this study evaluates the effectiveness of this in reducing vehicle speeds when approaching this curve. The use of these chevron signs at this location help improve motorist maneuvering through this curve. Similar FYG signage should be considered for locations where early detection is required to heighten the travelling public's awareness of an unfamiliar or non-typical condition.

Description

This report investigated the viability of using global positioning system (GPS) driven real-time data collection technology to capture appurtenance and line feature data for the Alberta Transportation and Utilities Geographic Information System. The report examines different data collection methods, investigates real-time data collection and its various equipment components and recommends a solution. The proposed solution incorporates a mapping grade receiver manufactured by Trimble Navigation Limited with a differential correction service provided by Landstar. The data logger configurations, the accuracy of the recommended system, available technical support, training requirements and quality control methods are all discussed. A field demonstration of the recommended system was performed on Nov. 13, 1998 and Nov. 20, 1998.

Road signage using Durable Fluorescent Diamond Grade Sheeting (DFDG) was installed in 1997 in the Peace Region, North Central Region and Southern Region to evaluate the effectiveness of DFDG signs in improving work zone safety on Alberta highways. Results of the study showed that DFDG signs are highly visible, easy to read and help improve work zone safety, and the report recommends that DFDG signs be used on all construction projects to improve work zone safety.

Description

The primary purpose of this project was to determine the extent to which two fly ashes readily available in Alberta affect the properties of concrete considered for use in bridge works, and accordingly to establish the conditions under which fly ash can safely be specified in such bridge works. The results confirm many potential advantages of using fly ash in air-entrained concrete, including reduced heat of hydration, the option to increase specified strength or reduce the unit volume cost, or some combination of both, particularly in massive bridge components, along with the prospect of satisfactory freeze-thaw durability under moist salt­-free exposure conditions, increased resistance to chloride ion penetration, and reduced shrinkage potential. Most of these benefits are realized more fully using a superplasticizing admixture instead of a conventional water-reducing admixture.
