The Government of Alberta includes Shelter Accommodation Expectations (SAE) as part of all grant funding agreements with year-round adult and family emergency shelter operators. The Shelter Accommodation Expectations include guidelines relating to safety and security, maintaining the shelter’s physical environment, guest rights and responsibilities, professional conduct, employment expectations, and various aspects of service delivery.

Description

On March 15, 2019, the Alberta Social Housing Corporation, on behalf of the Government of Alberta, and the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation signed a bilateral agreement under the 2017 National Housing Strategy bilateral agreement. As part of the agreement, Alberta will develop action plans to guide housing initiatives in the province and describe proposed programs and program funding allocations. The first action plan covered the time period April 1, 2019 to March 31, 2022, with the second action plan only covering one year, April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023. This is an update to Alberta’s second action plan, to cover the full three year cycle of April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2025.

Affordable housing supports low to moderate-income households that cannot attain housing at market rates. It can also provide stability for vulnerable people who may have significant barriers to accessing safe and suitable accommodations on their own. There are many types of affordable housing including emergency shelters, transitional accommodation, long-term supportive housing, subsidized housing and near-market housing.
