This surveillance report presents emergency department visits, hospitalizations, prescription drug dispensing from community pharmacies, emergency medical services, naloxone kit dispensing, supervised consumption service visits, and mortality data associated with opioids and other drugs in Alberta. Results are subject to change.

Degree Days are a measurement of heat accumulation. For the purpose of this report, Degree Days are calculated by subtracting the threshold temperature for West Nile Virus development (14.3 degrees celcius) from the daily mean temperature. Calculating the cumulative Degree Days over a season can be used to estimate the risk of transmission of the West Nile Virus by mosquitoes in Alberta. The risk of transmission increases with increasing Degree Day accumulation. Updated every two weeks during the West Nile Virus season.

The purpose of this Public Health Surveillance Bulletin is to estimate the effect of population age structure on the direct health care system cost in 2020 and 2030.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a serious gastrointestinal disease in newborns and mainly affects premature babies or babies of low birth weight in neonatal intensive care units. It is important to understand the epidemiology of NEC in Alberta -- to determine the extent of the disease and identify any risk factors that are preventable through public health intervention. This bulletin reports on the incidence of NEC and identifies potential risk factors for NEC based on a population-based cohort of neonates admitted to Alberta neonatal intensive care units between 2006 and 2011.
