Description

The Land Suitability Rating System (LSRS) rating map illustrates the relative suitability of lands in Alberta for growing spring-seeded small grains and shows how the dominant LSRS codes are distributed across Alberta. The LSRS rating process improves on the more subjective and dated Canada Land Inventory rating process. The map combines the AGRASID 4.1 computed LSRS values of the agricultural area of the province with the SLC 3.2 computed LSRS values of the forested area of the province. The report presents an overview of the physiography, climate, ecology, general soil patterns, and selected agricultural interpretations for the Gleichen SW map sheet. The accompanying soil map displays patterns of soils at a moderate level of detail. The soils were distinguished by patterns that relate to other landscape features such as landform and slope. Soil and terrain characteristics were interpreted for three agricultural applications: production of spring-seeded small grains, irrigation, and range productivity. The generalized ratings or capability classes are intended as guidelines for land use planners and managers. Agricultural land use, land suitability for production, and land management are briefly discussed.

Description

This soil survey report for the Municipal District of Cardston begins with a general description of the survey area. Part 2 contains the descriptions of the principal soils and their respective soil map units. In Part 3, the rationale and actual ratings of the map units for dryland agricuhure, grazing productivity and irrigation capability are explained and displayed. Part 4 describes the areal extent of erosion and salinity within the M.D. and and discusses the impacts of erosion, factors influencing soil degradation and possible management techniques. Appendices include: a brief explanatory section on soil formation and classification for the uninitiated user; analytical procedures employed for determining the physical and chemical properties of the soil series; the areas of the individual soil map units; a glossary of terms used in the report and a key to the soil series used on the soil maps.

Description

The main part of this report briefly describes the location and extent, population and land use, physiography, climate, vegetation, and surficial geology of the survey area. Soil classification and mapping procedures are outlined, and the generalized distribution of soils is described in terms of physiographic subdivisions. Soil degradation, with emphasis on erosion, is also briefly described. Appendices provide more detailed technical and descriptive information. Soils are described at the most detailed level of classification, the series level, in Appendix A. The soil, map and miscellaneous units are described in some detail in Appendix B. Appendix C contains interpretive and land capability information for selected agricultural land uses, namely arable agriculture, irrigation and rangeland.
