High school completion is a fundamental building block on which other educational and life goals are built; so when students do not complete high school, the toll on the quality of their individual lives is significant. To assist Alberta School Jurisdictions in successfully increasing their high school completion rates, Alberta Education has designed the High School Completion Strategic Framework around five areas for action: Student Engagement, Successful Transitions, Collaborative Partnerships, Positive Connections and Tracking Progress.

Effective use of technology can benefit all students, but especially those at the low and high ends of the achievement spectrum. The Technology and High School Success (THSS) initiative was a part of Alberta Education’s ongoing research into best practices in classroom technology implementation. This two‐year project was carried out in the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 school years and involved over 22,000 students and 420 teachers at over 70 schools. This report presents findings of a study into the results of the two-year initiative.

High school completion is a fundamental building block on which other educational and life goals are built; so when students do not complete high school, the toll on the quality of their individual lives is significant. Effective use of technology can benefit all students, but especially those at the low and high ends of the achievement spectrum. The Technology and High School Success (THSS) initiative is a part of Alberta Education’s ongoing research into best practices in classroom technology implementation. The overall goal of the initiative is to examine the use of technology to improve student engagement and success in high school. This two‐year project is being carried out in the 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 school years and involves over 22,000 students and 420 teachers at over 70 schools. This report presents preliminary results after the first year of the two-year initiative.

Completion of high school is an important objective for the individual and for society. This report outlines outcomes to achieve the target in Alberta Learning's 2000-2003 business plan of improving high school completion rate within six years of entering Grade 9 from 70 per cent to 75 per cent. The suggested outcomes include: enhancing early childhood development supports; listening to and supporting students; managing student alienation; increasing opportunities for success among Aboriginal students; increasing students' knowledge of self and effects of labeling; increasing program flexibility; enhancing cooperative education opportunities; tracking students; and building on best practices.
