Over the past three years, government has undertaken several province-wide engagement initiatives -- Inspiring Education, Inspiring Action, Speak Out and Setting the Direction, to help shape Alberta's vision for education. Each of these initiatives has contributed to the ongoing renewal of Alberta's education system and influenced the proposed new education legislation. The proposed Act is designed to enable the transformation of Alberta's education system by providing a foundation and expectations for educational excellence. Albertans were invited to participate in the process by expressing their views in community meetings, in writing, or through social media (see consultation methods below). All of the thoughts and suggestions Albertans provided are being considered during the drafting of new legislation to govern Alberta?s education system, which will be introduced in the Legislature in spring 2012. Moving Forward with High School Redesign is grounded in nine foundational principles: Mastery Learning ; Rigorous and Relevant Curriculum ; Personalization ; Flexible Learning Environments ; Educator Roles and Professional Development ; Meaningful Relationships ; Home and Community Involvement ; Assessment ; Welcoming, Caring, Respectful and Safe Learning Environment. These foundational principles are interconnected. While a school may choose to focus on one or two principles in any given year, it is likely that they will touch on other principles as well.

Over the past three years, government has engaged Albertans in wide-ranging conversations about the future of education in Alberta. Three major initiatives included: Inspiring Education: A Dialogue with Albertans; Setting the Direction for Special Education in Alberta, and; Speak Out: The Alberta Student Engagement Initiative. Each of these has played a part in painting a picture of what the future of education should look like. Why is this important to parents and students, to business and the community, to the education system and to government? The upcoming series of meetings are government's opportunity to check in with the public to make certain we are on track to getting the future right for our children.

Collaborative Practices is a term used by Alberta Education to describe many different activities that support a culture in which children and youth are equipped to overcome challenges and experience success in school. The success is apparent when schools, school authorities and their partners work together to provide supports and services in a way that is timely, culturally sensitive and responsive.

The report, Promising Practices in First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education is part of the ongoing work of Alberta Education's, First Nations, Metis and Inuit Services Branch to identify school based practices that support positive outcomes for First Nations Metis and Inuit (FNMI) students. The in-depth, case studies of two Alberta schools is in direct response Alberta's Commission on Learning (2003) Recommendation #40 supporting an education system that encourages diversity of programming for FNMI students and learns from innovative programs. The two schools highlighted in this report were selected from a total of sixteen pilot schools in the recently completed First Nations Metis and Inuit (FMNI) School-Community Learning Environment Project. The report provides a literature review of current research in Aboriginal Education followed by a background section providing an overview of the project. In March 2003, Alberta Education began preparatory work for the First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) School-Community Learning Environment Project to address a recognized achievement gap between FNMI and non FNMI learners. Implementation of the project occurred during the 2004-05 school year with the objective of addressing the needs of FNMI learners in sixteen pilot schools across Alberta. A collaborative approach among school staffs, Aboriginal parents, Elders, jurisdiction leaders, Alberta Education, and Aboriginal communities resulted in the implementation of a wide variety of innovative practices designed to improve FNMI student outcomes at individual pilot schools. The FNMI School-Community Learning Environment Project - Promising Practices Report (2007) highlights these promising practices in light of current research.
