Description

This study on the potential for production in Alberta of significant chemicals going into polyurethane products was commissioned by Alberta Economic Development. The study considers chemicals considered most likely to lead to a polyurethane ingredient industry in Alberta. The study is intended to provide bases for consideration and promotion of the production of such chemicals in Alberta. It will be noted later that very proprietary technologies are involved in a few key processing steps, processes that will come with the plant operator.

Designated industrial zones in Alberta are areas targeted for strategic investment and development of clustered industrial development and economic diversification. Alberta Environment and Parks and the Alberta Energy Regulator have developed this directive as a tool to more efficiently and effectively regulate the industries within the Industrial Heartland Designated Industrial Zone to help achieve consistency across the zone and environmental outcomes. The directive focuses on aligning standard conditions under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act for all facilities in the zone and clarifies requirements for new proponents intending to locate in the zone.

The main objective of the study was to investigate the market, technical, agronomic and economic feasibilities of producing quinoa in Alberta and selling it in domestic and international markets. The ultimate goal is to introduce quinoa to Alberta as a source of a starch, fat replacing ingredient in many diet products, high quality protein and saponin products for industry, and as a contribution to crop diversification and the competitive use of set-aside or marginal lands.

The strategy outlines priority actions to address labour force issues and challenges experienced by the forest industry. Industry and labour groups are best positioned to implement these strategies over Government will enable and support contributing organizations with the implementation wherever appropriate. A Workforce Strategy for Alberta’s Forest Industry was developed by stakeholders from the forest industry with support from the Alberta government. Representatives from this industry participated in a series of discussions that occurred between 2007 and early 2008 and the feedback from those meetings formed this strategy.
