Description
Designated industrial zones in Alberta are areas targeted for strategic investment and development of clustered industrial development and economic diversification. Alberta Environment and Parks and the Alberta Energy Regulator have developed this directive as a tool to more efficiently and effectively regulate the industries within the Industrial Heartland Designated Industrial Zone to help achieve consistency across the zone and environmental outcomes. The directive focuses on aligning standard conditions under the Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act for all facilities in the zone and clarifies requirements for new proponents intending to locate in the zone.

Usage Considerations
The IH-DIZ Directive is only valid for EPEA-regulated facilities in the Industrial Heartland at this time. The purpose of the IH DIZ Directive includes:
• Address inconsistency in EPEA approval requirements
• Standardizes requirements that apply to all facilities in the zone
• Enable effective timelines to implement new or enhanced requirements for facilities located in the zone
• Provides a platform to enable IH DIZ policies to be implemented and are legally enforceable through reference in EPEA site-specific approvals.
