Distribution of Population by Age and Sex, Alberta

Description

This Alberta Official Statistic compares the distribution of Alberta’s population by age and sex for two Census years (2006 and 2011). Age and sex are the most basic characteristics of a population. Every population has a different age and sex composition – the number and proportion of males and females in each age group. These characteristics are typically represented in a population pyramid.

Usage Considerations

The horizontal bars present the numbers of males and females in each group. The sum of all the age-sex groups in the population pyramid equals 100 percent of the population.

The data used for these pyramids are taken from the 2006 and the 2011 Censuses of Population. Statistics Canada conducts the Census of Population every 5 years in order to develop a statistical portrait of Canada and Canadians on one specific day. The census is designed to provide information about people and housing units in Canada by their demographic, social and economic characteristics.

The census enumerates the entire Canadian population, which consists of Canadian citizens (by birth and by naturalization), landed immigrants and non-permanent residents and their families living with them in Canada. Non-permanent residents are persons who hold a work or student permit, or who claim refugee status. Responding to the Census is mandatory.
