Description

This report provides information on the soils of Townships 88-89 in the the Fort McMurray region, with particular reference to agricultural and urban development. The soil survey programme consisted of classifying, defining, and delineating different kinds of soil based on the nature of the parent material, thickness and sequence of soil horizons (layers), organic matter content, reaction, slope and drainage of the soil.

Description

This report describes the Tawatinaw area in east-central Alberta, making reference to its physiographic features, parent material, and vegetation. A brief review of soil formation is included as background material to a discussion of the classification system and how it relates to this area. Soil characteristics are related to their use and management. Each soil series mapped is discussed in turn, giving its characteristics, distribution, and land use considerations. The appendix includes contributions from individuals in other disciplines who have conducted studies in this area. A soil and topography map, as well as a soil rating map, form an integral part of this report.

This report gives a brief history of the development of the Mount Watt and Fort Vermilion area, in the northwestern portion of the Peace River district in northern Alberta. It describes the climate and major physical features, gives the morphological and chemical characteristics of the soils, and discusses certain aspects of land use. Appendices are included for the classification of the soils and the terminology for describing the soils. The soil map shows the location and extent of the different soil areas and indicates the main topographical features. The soil rating map separates the more productive land from the less productive agricultural land and serves as a guide to future agricultural development.
