Description

Obsidian research in Alberta has revealed traces of long-distance trade by Indigenous peoples prior to European contact. This article revisits previous obsidian sourcing results from the Eastern Slopes of Alberta where obsidian has been identified at 285 archaeological sites. The vast majority of obsidian artifacts are derived from the Bear Gulch (Idaho), Obsidian Cliff (Wyoming), and Anahim Peak and Mount Edziza (British Columbia) sources, with small quantities of obsidian from other sources. Obsidian distribution appears related to communal bison hunting in the southern component of the Eastern Slopes and to east-west oriented river networks in the northern component.

Description

This essay principally documents accounts of two protohistoric Indigenous groups, Snare and Snake, and investigates how they interacted with one another and with other groups in the area through time. Boreal ecology, ethnoarchaeology and ethnohistory are used to explore and outline this and other aspects of the area's cultural history. In doing so, inferences are made from descriptions about protohistoric and historic Indigenous occupation in the area to provide an analogy for the prehistoric past. Given the archaeology, such an analogy may well be the most valid tool for postulating Indigenous cultural history in the upper Athabaska.

Description

This paper presents an analysis of raw obsidian from Big Southern Butte in southern Idaho to confirm the provenance of artifacts of this material in Alberta’s pre-contact record. Early Holocene migration patterns and retained kinship networks from the Columbia Plateau and Snake River Plain to the Northern Plains may explain why Big Southern Butte obsidian made its way to southern Alberta. Humans appear to have used the navigable Snake River Plain as a conduit through much of the otherwise high elevation Rocky Mountains to eventually reach Alberta. Rising population densities and other variables in the Middle Holocene seem to have severed these connections.
