The program aims to build long-term watershed resiliency to flood and drought by improving natural watershed functions and engaging Albertans in the conservation, restoration, enhancement and stewardship of critical watershed features including wetlands, riparian areas and floodplains.

This study developed numeric nutrient target ranges, representing low, moderate and high risk of aquatic ecosystem impairment, for small agricultural streams in Alberta in the absence of Alberta-specific numeric nutrient water quality guidelines. The transport of nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus, from agricultural areas into surface water can lead to eutrophication of waterbodies. As a user of water, Alberta’s agriculture sector has a vested interest in surface water protection. Numeric guidelines for nutrients in surface waters serve a valuable role as benchmarks for water quality monitoring and watershed management programs, and agricultural sustainability initiatives.

In it, Alberta identifies significant flaws in the amendments, negative impacts to costs, investment, competitiveness, and regulatory certainty, as well as duplication of legislation and regulations Alberta has in place that ensure accurate and supported environmental reporting. The submission supports Alberta's position that the amendments add new barriers, impede progress to achieving environmental outcomes, and encroach on provincial jurisdiction.

The South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (2014 – 2024) has 122 strategies supporting eight key economic, social and environmental outcomes. As a means of assessing the progress made towards achieving the outcomes, various core and additional indicators are identified and regularly monitored, evaluated and reported on. Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation implements and annually reports on agriculture-specific and agriculture-supported strategies. This report compiles implementation status of these strategies up to the end of 2021.
