Description

To address challenges resulting from the rapid pace of oil sands development, and to anticipate the impacts of continuing growth, the Oil Sands Ministerial Strategy Committee of the provincial government was directed by Cabinet in 2006 to develop a coordinated short-term action plan to address the social, environmental and economic impacts of oil sands development in local communities. This report is designed to support that initiative and to provide a foundation of facts and information about oil sands developments.

Environmental Impact Assessment and associated applications pertaining to the proposed Nexen OPTI Canada Inc. Long Lake Phase 2 SAGD Project. The proposal is for bitumen production capacity of approximately 140,000 barrels per day using steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) technology. The location of the project is approximately 11 km south of the existing Long Lake project and approximately 16 km south of Anzac within the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. In spring 2005, the Minister of Children's Services requested a review of the Family and Community Support Services Program to identify program strengths and opportunities and explore possible strategies and means of improving collaboration and efficiency between FCSS and Child and Family Services Authorities. The review also looked at the unique challenges of rural FCSS programs, as well as the accountability of FCSS programs and their ability to use their partnerships and connection in the community to leverage additional funds.

This study delineates flood hazard areas and determines design flood levels along the Medicine River and Lasthill Creek through Eckville. The study area includes an approximate 13 km reach of the Medicine River and an approximate 5 km reach of Lasthill Creek. The design discharge for the Medicine River downstream of the Lasthill Creek confluence is 249 m³/s. The design discharges for the Medicine River and Lasthill Creek upstream of their confluence are 174 m³/s and 75.0 m³/s respectively. The study was prepared in December 2006. Flood information available after study completion may not be reflected in the current flood hazard study report or flood hazard mapping.

The Holmes Crossing Sandhills Ecological Reserve (ER) is 8 km southwest and the Fort Assiniboine Sandhills Wildland Provincial Park (WPP) is 9 km east of Fort Assiniboine; both are located within the Central Mixedwood Subregion. Holmes Crossing Sandhills ER occupies 1982 hectares and Fort Assiniboine WPP occupies 7903 ha. The latter area was the focus of a Lepidoptera survey in 2005. Both areas contain a number of vegetated transverse sand dunes dominated by stands of jack pine. Other habitats include aspen forest, dry meadows, fens, marshes, bogs and a series of riparian balsam poplar and alder forests. The purpose of this survey was to provide an annotated summary of the Lepidoptera species that occur in these areas, including notes on such parameters as relative abundance, distribution patterns, range extensions and any other relevant biological or behavioral information. This wildlife status report looks at the westslope cutthroat trout, a polytypic species of trout endemic to western North America. Populations in Alberta and British Columbia exist on the northern periphery of the species' range. Although historically a widespread species, westslope cutthroat trout has shown dramatic global declines in the number and distribution of populations due to habitat degradation, overharvesting and the introduction of nonnative species. The Alberta population of westslope cutthroat trout has a national designation of Threatened. This report is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
