RAMP was a three-year pilot project in southwestern Alberta. This project encouraged landowners to enhance public hunting and fishing access opportunities and wildlife habitat stewardship on private land. RAMP was funded by Alberta Sustainable Resource Development.

Description

The lake sturgeon is a unique component of Alberta's wildlife and a prized sportfish. In Alberta, lake sturgeon are now confined to two areas: the North Saskatchewan and South Saskatchewan river systems. This project assessed the management utility of existing harvest data on species populations by means of a creel survey on the South Saskatchewan River conducted in the summer of 2000. The survey data were compared to data collected from an annual questionnaire sent to all holders of a sturgeon fishing licence.

Description

The disparity of fishing pressure and available resource has prompted concerns regarding the impacts of competitive fishing events on fish resources and traditional sportfishing. These events tend to attract more anglers to the water bodies where they are held than might otherwise visit and a large portion of the total annual harvest of some species can be taken in just a few days. Although many events adopted a catch and release format to address the issue of increased fishing pressure, studies conducted in Alberta have shown that fish survival can be very low, and few competitive fishing events have total fish mortalities below 10%. Increased survival rates of released fish can be achieved by regulating where, when and how events are run, by instituting best management practices and by educating anglers on proper fish handling techniques.

Description

The main intent of the present report is to summarize and discuss potential factors that may effect walleye mortality at live-release tournaments. The discussion is focused primarily on parameters that were commonly and consistently monitored during all studied tournaments in Alberta. By consolidating the standardized data collected at 12 individual tournaments, the overall effects of environmental factors and tournament procedures on walleye mortality area assessed from a broader perspective. Additional factors that are known to influence mortality rates were monitored only as specific tournaments or during experimental studies are also discussed briefly in the present report.
