Description

Two species of liver flukes have recently gained attention in Albertaís livestock and game farm industries. One species, the common liver fluke, Fasciola hepatica, has a wide range of herbivore hosts in which it can develop including cattle, bison, sheep, deer, swine and llama. In contrast, the giant liver fluke, Fascioloides magna, has a narrow host range. Wapiti (elk), white-tailed deer and caribou are the main hosts of this latter parasite in North America.

Coccidiosis causes considerable economic loss in the poultry industry. Chickens are susceptible to at least 11 species of coccidia. The most common species are Eimeria tenella, which causes the cecal or bloody type of coccidiosis, E. necatrix, which causes bloody intestinal coccidiosis, and E. acervulina and E. maxima, which cause chronic intestinal coccidiosis.

Description

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is an extremely contagious disease affecting cloven-hoofed livestock and wildlife species, including cattle, pigs, sheep, bison, elk, deer, wild boar, llamas, etc. It is a viral disease causing fever and vesicles that rupture in the mouth and on the skin of the udder and feet. While adult animals rarely die from the disease, they stop eating, become lame and very ill. Human infection is rare, although people can be carriers, as the virus can live up to 36 hours in the human throat. FMD is a reportable disease in Canada under the Health of Animals Act.

The protozoan Trichomonas gallinae is a cosmopolitan parasite of pigeons and doves. Other birds such as domestic and wild turkeys, chickens, raptors (hawks, golden eagle, etc.) may also become infected. The disease in pigeons is commonly called "canker". Chorioptic mange on cattle is caused by the parasitic mite, Chorioptes bovis. It is one of the most common mites on cattle in Alberta. These mites do not burrow deeply into the skin as do Sarcoptes scabiei, the cause of sarcoptic mange. Unlike sarcoptic mange, chorioptic mange is not a federally reportable disease.
