Description

Vaccines are sensitive biological products that may become less effective or destroyed when exposed to temperatures outside the recommended range or inappropriate exposure to light. Cold Chain refers to the processes and procedures that maintain optimal temperature and light conditions during the transport, storage, and handling of vaccines. The purpose of the Alberta Vaccine Cold Chain Policy is to define vaccine cold chain practices in Alberta; and to define the roles and responsibilities of Alberta Health Services, community providers, Alberta Health, and pharmacies in implementing the Policy.

In the March 18, 2014 edition of Health Trends Alberta, a mathematical model was used to demonstrate rapid reductions in the number of hospitalizations expected with increasing influenza immunization coverage. This week, the model is used to demonstrate the benefits to the health care system that can be anticipated for next flu season, if coverage of 45 per cent is achieved.

In the fall of 2009, Alberta introduced a universal influenza immunization program for all Albertans aged 6 months and older. A mathematical model was developed to assist in public health planning and better understand the effects and interrelationships between immunizations, antiviral treatments, influenza infections, hospitalizations and deaths. The model was used to predict the number of hospitalizations expected at different levels of influenza immunization coverage.

Reaching immunization target rates is vital to ensure that Albertans are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases. In order to increase immunization rates, Alberta Health and Wellness developed the Alberta Immunization Strategy. The goal of increasing immunization rates is to be achieved through seven evidence-based strategic directions: enhancing accessibility; improving enabling technology; strengthening parental education and counselling; strengthening partnerships; strengthening provider training and education; strengthening public education and awareness; and strengthening research and evaluation.
