Description

This report collates and synthesizes much of the current information and scientific literature on the impacts of climate change on forests and forest ecosystems, with special relevance to the province of Alberta. Forest ecosystems are highly dependent upon climate for distribution of tree species, their growth, productivity and health, and are predicted to respond in a variety of ways to a changing climate. This report presents an overview of the major impacts predicted to occur during the 21st century. Based upon climate change projections for Alberta, significant impacts reviewed are in relation to tree species distributions, changes in forest ecosystems and biodiversity, wetland areas, growth and productivity responses of trees, disturbance events, forest genetics, invasive species, and with an emphasis on forest health-related issues. Greenhouse gas emissions intensity is regulated on a facility-by-facility basis. Targets are set at the facility and that facility's performance over time is compared against its approved baseline emissions intensity.

Alberta is the only province in Canada that regulates landfills based on the quantity of greenhouse gas emitted. This guidance document was produced by the Alberta Landfill Gas Working Group to assist landfills to quantify landfill gas emissions by way of modelling, and to fulfill the requirements of the Specified Gas Reporting Regulation and Specified Gas Emitters Regulation. Another key objective of the guidance document was to standardize modeling parameters while taking into account site-specific conditions for the province of Alberta. This guidance document will be recognized by Alberta as the standardized method for landfill specified gas quantification until such time when standardized field quantification methods are approved in the future.

An afforestation project will achieve GHG reductions/removals through the increase in carbon stocks on the project site as a result of the growth of trees. The opportunity for generating carbon offsets with this protocol arises mainly from carbon sequestration from planting trees on land not traditionally forested, such as agricultural land, urban land, agro-forestry operations and perhaps rehabilitation of industrial lands.
