The Royalty Review Advisory Panel examined technical aspects of Alberta's royalty framework to consider how the framework could be optimized. As part of this work, it compared Alberta to other places that have energy resources and want to attract energy investment. Seven competitor and comparator jurisdictions were looked at for crude oil and liquids investment. One in a series of fact sheets produced to give Albertans a basic knowledge of the royalty system and assist them in effectively participating in royalty review discussions.

In 2014, approximately 15 per cent of Alberta's total oil production was used by refineries within the province, 11 per cent was delivered to refineries in other parts of Canada, and 74 per cent was exported to U.S. markets.
