Description

Following a situation concerning inadequate sterilization of surgical instruments at an Alberta hospital, in March 2007 the Minister of Alberta Health and Wellness asked regional health authorities, the Alberta Cancer Board, and the health professional regulatory bodies to review and advise him on their infection prevention and control (IPC) policies, programs and systems. This report of the provincial review outlines the importance of IPC in the context of Alberta's health system and what was learned about the current state of IPC in Alberta. It identifies directions for moving forward, including specific actions to strengthen and enhance infection prevention and control across the health system in Alberta.

Building on the current context of health and education in Alberta schools, an action plan will be developed to identify current initiatives supported by Alberta Education and Alberta Health and Wellness, as well as future initiatives that can be implemented to strengthen the development of healthy Alberta school communities..

Reaching immunization target rates is vital to ensure that Albertans are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases. In order to increase immunization rates, Alberta Health and Wellness developed the Alberta Immunization Strategy. The goal of increasing immunization rates is to be achieved through seven evidence-based strategic directions: enhancing accessibility; improving enabling technology; strengthening parental education and counselling; strengthening partnerships; strengthening provider training and education; strengthening public education and awareness; and strengthening research and evaluation.

Positive Futures has been adapted from the draft document, Policy Framework: Mental Health for Alberta’s Children and Youth (2001) that was developed by the cross-ministerial Children’s Mental Health Framework Steering Committee within the context of the Alberta Children and Youth Initiative (ACYI). The policy framework received cross-ministry and cross-regional support in 2001.Vital to the development of the provincial framework was a comprehensive review of background literature and key resources (see Appendix), and a comprehensive provincial consultation with key stakeholders.

In the Spring of 2005, the provincial government hosted a symposium on health care and followed this up with a province-wide consultation to discuss how to improve Alberta’s health system. This was followed with the development of a series of action items in the Getting on with Better Health Care package. A Health Policy Framework was released in February 2006, to provide clear and consistent direction in health care reform. This document presents a revised version of the Health Policy Framework, which has been updated based on suggestions and ideas of Albertans in response to the initial framework. The purpose of the framework is to lead the way toward a more sustainable, response and accessible health system that is based on a more holistic and comprehensive approach to care.

The framework was created to guide government and health care partners in making positive, innovative changes to the public health care system that work for Albertans and Alberta's health care providers. Albertans were invited to provide feedback on the framework, and the framework was revised in August 2006 based on this feedback.
