Description

The Local Government Fiscal Framework (LGFF) is Alberta’s primary funding mechanism for providing local governments with predictable infrastructure and operating grant support. LGFF funding is allocated annually to eligible recipients based on a funding formula. The LGFF is replacing the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, which was in place from 2007 to 2023.

This two-page information sheet provides a summary of the results of a public engagement process to explore amendments to the Local Authorities Election Act and Municipal Government Act which would enhance accountability and public trust in local elections and local elected officials. The public engagement was conducted by Municipal Affairs between June 29 to July 22, 2022 of municipal associations were also contacted to gather additional input. As part of the tools Alberta Municipal Affairs uses to measure its performance, the ministry has developed a number of municipal indicators which measure specific aspects of each municipality's governance, finances or community. This fact sheet provides an explanation of each municipal indicator and how it are used by the Government of Alberta. These indicators can also be used by municipalities to obtain useful information and alerts to emerging challenges.
