The air quality health index helps Albertans understand what the air quality in their communities means to their health. The AQHI uses measured fine particulate matter levels in its reporting and forecasting. Air quality advisories are issued when smoke from forest fires may affect communities.

The LARP identifies strategic directions that will improve our ability to achieve desired economic, environmental and social outcomes in the region.

The communities of Exshaw and Lac Des Arcs are located in the Bow River Valley corridor within the Rocky Mountains. Several industrial facilities (Lafarge cement plant, Graymont lime plant and Baymag magnesium plant), operate in the area. The Francis Cooke landfill is also located in the valley, which accepts construction and dry waste. Other anthropogenic emissions (i.e., traffic from Highways 1 and 1A) also contribute to air quality in the area.
