Description

This Guideline was developed to ensure consistency in the interpretation of the use of ambient air quality objectives within Alberta’s industrial air management system. It outlines the process for: the implementation of new or revised ambient air quality objectives; interpreting and acting on modelled concentrations in relation to ambient air quality objectives; setting additional individual industrial site monitoring; and specifying a procedure for calculating ambient concentrations over different averaging times.

For this network assessment, the monitoring objectives focused on a regional approach to monitoring, primarily for the purpose of air quality management using the cumulative effects management system. ESRD and other stakeholders defined the monitoring objectives for the network. The monitoring objectives for this regional monitoring network include the following: 1) Identify regional air quality trends; 2) provide appropriate information for evaluating ambient air quality in centres with population greater than 20,000; 3) measure pollutants of concern for the purpose of air quality management; and 4) understand the spatial distribution of pollutants in the region.

A brownfield site is defined as "an abandoned, vacant, derelict or underutilized property where past actions have resulted in actual or perceived contamination and where there is an active potential for productive community use including reuse and full redevelopment." The Working Group analyzed information from Alberta and other jurisdictions, identified issues, created and evaluated options to prepare recommendations and advice for the Minister of Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development, and Municipal Affairs.
