This administrative procedure outlines the transition process between the Wildlife Guidelines for Alberta Solar Energy Projects (2016) and the new Wildlife Directive for Alberta Solar Energy Projects.

Habitat alteration is the primary threat to this species. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goal of maintaining the current distribution and population of long-billed curlew in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.

The Sprague's pipit is a small, ground-nesting songbird which, in Alberta, is found almost exclusively on native prairie. The bird is designated a Species of Special Concern in Alberta due to its large historic population decline and potential for continuing habitat alteration. This plan provides background information on the species and outlines a set of objectives and management actions to help meet the goals of returning Sprague's pipit populations to the mean abundance levels between 1980 and 1989, and conserving and maintaining remaining native prairie within the historic range of the species in Alberta. Conservation management plans are developed for Species of Special Concern in Alberta, to provide guidance for land and resource management decisions that affect the species and their habitat. They are intended to be a resource tool for provincial and regional fish and wildlife, land and resource management staff.

Description

The Boreal Subarctic natural subregion is found on elevated plateaus of far northern Alberta, and encompasses about three per cent of the Boreal Forest Natural Region. It is dominated by open black spruce bogs and peatland complexes with frozen organic soils and permafrost terrain. Moderately well drained upland areas have a variety of upland forests. It is characterized by short, cool summers and long, very cold winters. It is hoped the classification system presented in this resource can be used by field staff to assess the ecology of the sites and develop management prescriptions on lands within this region. Fifty-three community types are listed. The dominant plant species, canopy cover, soil group and subgroup, and environmental conditions are outlined for each type.
