The Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Annex is an addition to the Agreement for Canada-Alberta Cooperation on Immigration. The Annex includes an agreement to implement a number of pilots. One of the pilots allows Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to issue an occupation-specific work permit to TFWs working in Alberta in one of the following specific occupations: steamfitter-pipefitter, estimator, welder, heavy-duty equipment mechanic, ironworker, millwright and industrial mechanic, and carpenter.

Alberta Enterprise and Advanced Education completed a comprehensive research study of the labour supply in select occupations in the United States (U.S.), including a number of engineering and related professions. The objective of the study is to provide labour market intelligence that will inform Alberta employers as they seek to address current and future labour shortages. This document lists the 66 occupations selected for review in the 2012 U.S. Labour Supply Study.

The Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) Annex is an addition to the Agreement for Canada-Alberta Cooperation on Immigration. The Annex includes an agreement to implement a number of pilots. One of the pilots allows Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) to issue an occupation-specific work permit to TFWs working in Alberta in the steamfitter-pipefitter trade. Six new occupations have been added to the pilot: carpenter, estimator, heavy-duty equipment mechanic, ironworker, millwright and industrial mechanic, and welder.

One of those pilot projects allows for the spouses and common law partners of long-haul truck drivers operating out of Alberta be eligible to receive open work permits.
