The purpose of this directive is to provide direction to Fish and Wildlife Stewardship Branch staff and relevant staff in other Government of Alberta departments when responding to situations when comingling between bighorn sheep or mountain goats and domestic sheep and goats is observed or may potentially occur and when responding to pneumonia outbreaks in bighorn sheep or mountain goats.

Results from aerial mountain goat population surveys conducted in the Willmore Wilderness Park from June 23-July 12, 2021. The objective of the surveys was to inform the status of mountain goat populations in the Northwest Region which have traditionally supported licensed or unlicensed harvest and four complexes where declines have resulted in very small populations with high conservation risk.

Description

Annual surveys for mountain goats have been conducted in the Willmore Wilderness Park and adjacent areas since 1974, to collect data on population trends, distribution and herd composition, and to monitor the status of these mountain goat herds. The objectives of this survey were to assess the status of mountain goat populations in the three hunted complexes in Willmore Wilderness Park. An additional complex was also assessed to inform general population trends. Aerial surveys are the primary method used to assess the population size, distribution, population trends and herd composition of ungulates in Alberta. This information supports the effective management and conservation of ungulates, and is used to set hunting licence allocations, identify areas with agricultural depredation problems, and determine priority areas for recovery actions.
