This nocturnal toad spends most of its time underground, only emerging to breed during fabourable conditions or to feed. Observational records are therefore rare. This report reviews information on the plains spadefoot in Alberta, as a step in updating its status in the province. It is part of the Alberta Wildlife Status Report series, which provides comprehensive summaries of selected wildlife species intended to be useful to those managing populations of species and their habitats, and to help identify species that may be formally designated as endangered or threatened.
