Description

The first part of this report gives a general description of some of the physical characteristics of the Rocky Mountain House region, located in west central Alberta. The second part describes the soils of the area. The soil types are arranged in a systematic order to show the relationship one to another. The third part of the report is an appendix which gives, in some detail, data relating to the soils and the area. The soil map shows the location and extent of the different soil types, as well as indicating the main topographic features. Other maps show the relative producing capacity of the soil areas, the extent and location of the cultivated land, the kind of parent material on which the soils were formed.

In 1960 the soil survey section of the Research Council of Alberta continued its program of exploratory soil surveys by helicopter. Information gathered by these surveys can be used to determine timber possibilities, for outlining the areas which may be suitable for future agricultural development, and for the planning of roads which could be utilized for mineral prospecting and other developments. During 1960 the exploratory soil survey covered Alberta map sheets 84-M, 84-N, 84-O.

In 1959 the soil survey section of the Research Council of Alberta continued its program of exploratory soil surveys by helicopter. Information gathered by these surveys can be used to determine timber possibilities, for outlining the areas which may be suitable for future agricultural development, and for the planning of roads which could be utilized for mineral prospecting and other developments. During 1959 the exploratory soil survey covered Alberta map sheets 84-J, 84-K and 84-L.

Description

The Royal Commission on the Development of Northern Alberta was established to study the conditions and particular requirements of the northern areas of Alberta in relation to their present and potential development, to assist the economic development of the area. The first meeting of the Commission was held in July 1957 and it released its report in March of the following year. The report includes a set of recommendations under the headings of agriculture, forestry, surveys, transportation, communication, water resources, and general recommendations.
