Description

The Carbon Offset Emission Factors Handbook contains a listing of common emission factors used in the Alberta carbon offset system as well as common quantification methodologies. Common emission factors, provided in section 1, are intended as inputs to formulae provided in approved quantification protocols. Common quantification methods, provided in section 2, are commonly used formulae for quantification of greenhouse gas offsets in Alberta. This section includes both quantification methods and factors required for greenhouse gas offset quantification. Emission factors and methodologies are subject o periodic updates. Updated values are immediately applicable for use in new offset projects. Current projects will be required to transfer to updated factors if they receive a crediting period extension. The project developer is responsible for ensuring the most current version is used for annual project reporting.

It outlines the process for: the implementation of new or revised ambient air quality objectives; interpreting and acting on modelled concentrations in relation to ambient air quality objectives; setting additional individual industrial site monitoring; and specifying a procedure for calculating ambient concentrations over different averaging times.

The purpose of this manual is to provide a standardized sampling protocol for assessing bat community composition and relative abundance of the nine species of bats found in Alberta. The goal is to ensure that all studies on bats in Alberta collect the same types of information in standard formats. In turn, this will promote centralized tracking of bat studies to identify information gaps, facilitate monitoring of bat distributions and population trends, promote information-sharing between projects, and enable between-project and between-year comparisons.

This document is intended as a guide for studying long-toed salamanders, with emphasis on survey techniques and long-term monitoring. Egg surveys are recommended as the best method by which to identify salamander presence, unless water turbidity limits visibility. Egg surveys can also be used as an indirect way to track population trends over time. Larvae searches can be used as an ancillary method to search for presence, but tend to be less reliable because larvae are mobile and cryptic. Capture methods include pitfall and minnow trapping. Capturing adults is useful for gathering data on body parameters and general health, and is considered secondary to pond surveys. Mark-recapture is the only method by which to gather data on population size or relative abundance, although it is a long-term, time-consuming process that is confounded by the stochasticity inherent in amphibian populations. Long-term monitoring of known breeding ponds is necessary to understand population trends and...

This manual was initially intended as a procedures manual for the compilation teams conducting the Canada-Alberta Environmentally Sustainable Agriculture Soil Inventory Project (1993 to 1998), and was updated and revised in 1998 to accompany the digital soils information compiled during the project. The manual describes the procedures used and the attribute data captured during the project. It also provides users of the database some background information on the mapping systems used during the compilation of the soils database.
