Description

The Peace River Parkland Natural Subregion accounts for only 0.5 per cent of the province and is characterized by gently rolling cultivated plains and steep south-facing grassy and forested slopes along the Peace River and its tributaries. Vegetation is a mosaic and dominated by forests of aspen and white spruce, wetlands and small remnant grasslands on the uplands, and dry grasslands and aspen forests on valley slopes. This guide represents the analysis of 378 plots described in the Peace River Parkland subregion. These 378 plots represent 73 observed and described plant community types. An analysis of successional changes in the presence and absence of grazing disturbance for the grasslands (Appendix 1) and aspen (Appendix 2) dominated community types for the Peace region is also outlined in Appendices 1 and 2. The Peace River Parkland Natural Subregion accounts for only 0.5 percent of the province and is characterised by gently rolling cultivated plains and steep south-facing grassy and forested slopes along the Peace River and its tributaries. Vegetation is a mosaic and dominated by forests of aspen and white spruce, wetlands and small remnant grasslands on the uplands, and dry grasslands and aspen forests on valley slopes. This guide represents the analysis of 345 plots described in the Peace River Parkland subregion. These 345 plots represent 70 observed and described plant community types. An analysis of successional changes in the presence and absence of grazing disturbance for the grasslands (Appendix 1) and aspen (Appendix 2) dominated community types for the Peace region is also outlined in Appendices 1 and 2.

The report is a summary of an extensive literature search related to landscape conservation tools in North America and internationally. It identifies the types of conservation tools that could be tailored for application in Alberta to protect native prairie grasslands. Additional opportunities for future research are also outlined, which may help catalyze the formation of partnerships to protect Alberta's intact native grasslands. The report addresses Alberta's South Saskatchewan Regional Plan, Strategy 3.14b: exploring conservation approaches and tools for protecting intact native grasslands.

The fescue grasslands of Alberta are an important grazing resource for both wildlife and domestic livestock. These grasslands are also found in some of the most ecological diverse areas of the province. Looman (1982) described three zones of rough fescue in Alberta, characterized by a different species. In the Northern rough fescue zone, north of 51 N latitude in the foothills of North-central Alberta three undisturbed rough fescue dominated types have been described. These include the Rough fescue-Hairy wildrye dominated community which is found on dry, well-drained sites. On moister sites with deep snow accumulation bog birch will invade to form the Bog birch/Rough fescue/Bearberry dominated community type. In contrast, on moist, rich sites tufted hairgrass co-dominates with rough fescue to form the Rough fescue-Tufted hairgrass dominated community type.
