This interim directive would enable the Alberta Energy Regulator to accept, review and make decisions to change peatlands to forest lands. The intent of the pilot is to streamline decision processes while ensuring public lands continue to be managed with clear reclamation and restoration outcomes in mind. The interim directive is in effect for 18 months starting February 1, 2024 and expiring on July 31, 2025.

Under an extended producer responsibility system, producers take responsibility at end-of-life for the products and packaging they put on the market, such as single-use products, packaging and paper products and hazardous and special products. This information sheet contains information on Alberta's Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation, which came into force on November 30, 2022, and which establishes the Alberta Recycling Management Authority as the management board responsible for oversight of the systems implemented under the regulation.

Under an extended producer responsibility system, producers take responsibility at end-of-life for the products and packaging they put on the market, such as single-use products, packaging and paper products and hazardous and special products. This information sheet serves as a reference guide for producers (including brand owners, importers and retailers) to Alberta's Extended Producer Responsibility Regulation, which came into force on November 30, 2022. EPR shifts the physical and financial burden of collecting, sorting, processing and recycling waste to producers who put materials into the market and away from local governments and taxpayers.
