Presents the findings of an investigation into a workplace fatality in the construction and construction trades sector that occurred in June, 2013. Due to a starter relay problem with the grader, a grader operator proceeded to start the grader by shorting across the starter terminals while standing between the left rear tires, adjacent to the engine compartment. Description

Presents the findings of an investigation into a workplace fatality in the construction and construction trades sector that occurred in March, 2014. A heavy equipment operator not fit for duty during a night shift was taken to his truck by his supervisor who then went to a trouble call. The supervisor later noticed that the operator was not in his truck and after an unsuccessful search the RCMP was called. A RCMP dog team found the operator’s body approximately 100 meters away in the bush, frozen. An apprentice heavy duty mechanic was working to troubleshoot lights on a vibrating drum packer. The mechanic fell out of the packer while exiting. When he fell, the packer moved forward and the rear left tire ran over the mechanic, causing fatal injuries. Description

Lead is a bluish-grey metal that is naturally present in the earth’s crust. Lead is used in the manufacturing of many consumer and industrial products and can be found in a variety of workplaces. Workers can be exposed to lead mainly through breathing in lead dust, fumes and vapour, or by ingestion. Ingestion usually occurs by eating, drinking or smoking in areas where lead contamination exists or hand to mouth transfer of lead including nail biting, licking one’s finger or touching one’s face. The health effects from lead exposure are the same regardless of how a worker is exposed. Most of the lead will leave the body when we go to the bathroom, lose skin cells, etc. The lead that remains in the body tends to accumulate through ongoing exposures and can be released into the blood at a later time long after the original exposure happened.
