Description

The Committee on Justices of the Peace was established in April 1986 to analyse legal problems associated with the existing system of Justices of the Peace in Alberta and to recommend solutions to these problems. Problems identified by the Committee included: appointment processes; restrictions on the exercise of functions, the exercise of disciplinary functions by the Department, the lack of tenure for Justices of the Peace, the method of remuneration, training and practice directions, and certain aspects of administration such as scheduling and assignment of duties. This report presents the findings of the Committee and its short- and long-term recommendations to resolve these problems.
