Description

This document summarized the use, performance, and limitations of plant growth regulators (PGRs) in western Canadian cereal production. It reviewed two types of PGRs: ethephon (Ethrel) and chlormequat chloride (Manipulator), and discussed their physiological effects, including reduced stem elongation and altered tillering. Field trials showed variable cultivar responses, with some wheat varieties benefiting from dual PGR applications. The document emphasized the importance of precise crop staging for effective application and noted trade and regulatory constraints, such as maximum residue limits (MRLs), that limit adoption. Research indicated inconsistent yield effects but highlighted potential protein content changes and the role of fungicide co application.
