Abuse of persons with disabilities

Description

Abuse can happen to anyone with any level of ability, female or male, young or old, rich or poor. Abuse can happen in heterosexual, same sex or LGBTQ relationships, long- or short-term relationships and between people who live together or separately. Abuse happens in cities, towns, villages, rural areas, isolated communities, reserves and settlements. It happens in all ethnic and racial groups and in all cultures. However, persons with disabilities may be more at risk of being abused than other persons. This booklet tells you why. The disability community is working toward making our province a safe place for everyone. Awareness of the abuse of persons with disabilities is steadily increasing. Each year, more safeguards are being put into place. Abuse of persons with disabilities is a serious problem, but there is help and hope.
