An organic waste inventory for Alberta’s agrifood sector

Description

The agriculture and food-processing industries are an important contributor to Alberta's economy. Despite the positive growth of the agriculture and food manufacturing sector, there is limited understanding of the by-products and residues left behind. The goal of this study was to create an organic waste inventory for Alberta that could help match waste products to end users as well as reveal opportunities for on-site waste reduction and diversion. The scope of the study was limited to four subsectors of the food and agriculture sector: food-processing facilities, livestock operations, grocery stores and residential yard waste.
