Interim guidance to authorize reuse of municipal and industrial wastewater

Description

Alberta Environment and Parks (AEP) and the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) are seeing an increase in applications to reuse treated municipal and/or industrial wastewater as a source of water for hydraulic fracturing and other secondary uses. AEP has signaled to the oil and gas industry that reuse of treated wastewater for hydraulic fracturing is a reasonable and preferable alternative to use of potable water or water from streams and shallow aquifers, and that wastewater reuse will be considered and supported as a water supply option during development of an alternative water use policy for the oil and gas industry, and in the development of a broader set of reuse policy directives.
