  This Act provides for the safe transportation and handling of products, substances and organisms included by their nature or by the regulations in any of the classes listed in the Act’s Schedule. Duties are imposed on persons handling, transporting or offering to transport dangerous goods and on persons with the charge, management or control of the means of containment of such goods. Penalties are set for contraventions of the Act. The Minister of Transportation is granted the authority to issue permits, make stop orders, designate inspectors and, where the release of dangerous goods has resulted in death or injury or danger to health or public safety or damage to property or the environment, direct public inquiries.
