Alberta’s municipalities are recovering from the recession

Description

The 2015/2016 recession resulted in rapidly rising unemployment and a surge in the number of Employment Insurance (EI) beneficiaries in Alberta. Last year’s wildfires also led to a sharp increase in EI beneficiaries in the Wood Buffalo area. The Alberta economy is bouncing back from the recession and most economic forecasting agencies are expecting it to lead the nation in economic growth this year. This commentary examines trends in EI numbers to see how well Alberta’s municipalities are bouncing back from the recession.
