Distribution and abundance of the western grebe (Aechmophorus occidentalis) in Alberta : an update

Description

This is a compilation of previously documented and newly discovered records of the western grebe in Alberta through 2016. The report greatly expands the number of lakes known to be occupied during the breeding season (1 May to 31 August) to 318, from a previous estimate of 80. The report suggests that western grebes are more abundant and widespread in Alberta than previously thought, and that the current status of “threatened” may require re-evaluation.
