Description
The Red Deer air quality monitoring station has exceeded national standards for fine particulate matter (or PM2.5) for three consecutive reporting periods starting in 2013. Government initiated work in this area in 2013 to develop an action plan in response to the exceedances. A local response plan was developed collaboratively between municipalities, industry, the local airshed and the provincial government. The local plan has since been supplemented by a province-wide government action plan. Sources of emissions affecting regional ambient air quality are a combination of industrial, transportation or non-point sources such as home heating. This is one of the response plans being implemented regionally and provincially to help reduce particulate matter throughout Central Alberta.
