Municipal compost use in Alberta : a report on survey results

Description

Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development conducted a survey of municipal governments in the fall of 2012 to better understand how municipal greenspaces are managed and constructed. Survey questions covered common construction and management practices for municipal greenspaces, including compost use. Thirty-two municipalities responded to the survey, which represented seventy percent of Alberta’s population. Survey results showed that, by area, the top five municipally managed greenspaces are sportsfields, playgrounds, boulevards, hillsides or ditches, and storm water retention ponds. These greenspaces provide the greatest opportunities for beneficially using large volumes of compost and efforts to increase compost use should first focus on these.
