This Alberta Official Statistic summarizes annual results of calculations of air quality index values as calculated by quality-assured and quality-controlled hourly ambient air quality data. It reports on the percentage of the time the air quality index was rated as Good. It also provides an overview of the index, the substances that are used in its calculation, and the causes of poor air quality both in a general sense, and with specific reference to actual events in the years presented.

Description

This Alberta Official Statistic uses a 5-year extended Facility Condition Index (FCI) value to report the physical condition of government owned or supported facilities. The FCI was adopted as a common measure to enhance reporting by enabling the Ministry of Infrastructure to compare condition ratings across facility types (health facilities, schools, post-secondary institutions and government owned facilities). The FCI is a ratio of the cost to address current and future (five year) maintenance needs, relative to facility replacement value. FCI’s are translated to good, fair and poor ratings based on the “interpretation of FCI Values” stated below. The percentages are calculated by taking the square metres of all facilities in good, fair or poor condition (as defined by FCI) and dividing each by the total area of all buildings within each facility type.

The Alberta Official Statistic describes rental vacancy rates for private structures with 3 or more apartments in Alberta and its major urban centres (Calgary CMA, Edmonton CMA, Red Deer CA, Lethbridge CA, Medicine Hat CA, Wood Buffalo CA and Grande Prairie CA). An analysis was made regarding the change in rental vacancies year over year. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) conducts the Rental Market Survey (RMS) every year in April and October to estimate the relative strengths in the rental market. The survey is conducted on a sample basis in all urban areas with populations of 10,000 and more. The survey targets only privately initiated structures with at least three rental units, which have been on the market for at least three months. The data collected for a structure depends on whether it is an apartment or a row structure. The survey collects market rent, available and vacant unit data for all sampled structures. This Alberta Official Statistic describes the mobility status (Place of Residence 5 years ago) of Albertans by Census Division for 2011. Mobility status refers to the relationship between a person’s usual place of residence on Census Day 2011 and his or her usual place of residence five years earlier in 2006. “Movers” are those who reported a change of address. “Internal migrants” resided in a different census division (CD) within Canada. “External migrants” resided outside Canada. Internal migrants who moved within the same province are called “intraprovincial migrants”, while those who moved between two provinces are identified as “interprovincial migrants”. Non-migrants are people who, on Census Day, were living at a different address but within the same CD five years earlier.

Mobility status refers to the relationship between a person’s usual place of residence on Census day (May 10, 2011) and his or her place of residence five years earlier (May 10, 2006). “Movers” are those who reported a change of address. There are two types of “Movers”: “Non-Migrants” and “Migrants”. “Migrants” are classified into “External Migrants” and “Internal Migrants”, which are further categorized into “Intraprovincial Migrants” and “Interprovincial Migrants”.

This Alberta Official Statistic describes the highest level of educational attainment among the population (25 to 64 years of age) in 2011. The population is divided into larger urban centres and rural and small town areas. Within rural and small town Alberta, the population is divided into four categories according to integration with urban economies. The four categories are called Metropolitan Influence Zones (MIZ) and capture urban integration by measuring the percentage of the working population commuting to urban centers.
