This document describes the transformation grids available in Alberta to transform coordinate data from one geometric reference frame to another and vice-versa as well as data analysis results for each transformation grid. This document supersedes the README.doc file produced by the Geodetic Control Unit (Sustainable Resource Development, now called Alberta Environment and Parks) on August 11, 2007.

Description

This document describes the contents of an excel format spreadsheet for 32,971 published ASCMs. The coordinate and elevation information for these ASCMs are based on the NAD83V7.0.0.AB.1 provincial readjustment of the Alberta Survey Control network. As a result, the geographic coordinate data is referenced to the North American Datum of 1983 Canadian Spatial Reference System version 7 geometric reference frame at Epoch 2010 (i.e., NAD83(CSRS)v7 E2010). The elevation data is referenced to the Canadian Geodetic Vertical Datum of 2013 (CGVD2013). This spreadsheet is current to November 6, 2020.

Alberta Survey Control Marker (ASCM) index maps are a graphical representation of the provincial spatial referencing system. The index maps display the location of integrated ASCMs in relation to various base mapping features including the Alberta Township System, hydrography, geo-administrative boundaries (Municipal and Canada lands), road networks, railways, and airports. In addition, index maps covering urban areas include street names, networks, and major facilities (schools, hospitals, etc.). Only those markers with a marker condition of GOOD or ANOMALOUS are displayed on the index maps. ASCM index maps are available from https://www.alberta.ca/geodetic-control-unit.aspx#toc-3.

Alberta Survey Control Marker (ASCM) data is available for three reference frames: The North American Datum of 1927 (NAD27), the original derivation of the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83(Original)), and the Canadian Spatial Reference System (CSRS) derivation of NAD83 (NAD83(CSRS)). This fact sheet reviews the NAD27 and NAD83(Original) datums including currency of coordinate data, coordinate differences between datums, and phasing out of ASCM integration and maintenance of coordinate data on each datum.

This Fact Sheet presents a brief overview of provincial readjustments of the Alberta Survey Control network as well as national (cross-Canada) readjustments that define the reference frame in Canada (and Alberta). It is important to note that with the advancement of least squares adjustment software in the 70’s and 80’s, the ability to carry out large scale readjustments has increased dramatically. This increase is reflected in the implementation and refinement of various 2-dimensional (NAD27) and 3-dimensional (NAD83) reference frames in Canada (including Alberta).
