Description

The bedrock topography of Alberta is the surface of the top of Upper Cretaceous and Paleogene bedrock, and reveals geomorphic features created by Paleogene to Recent river systems and Quaternary glaciation. This dataset consists of previously published information from Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) maps and reports, as well as new data for which the quality has been assessed in order to apply a quality-weighting approach prior to modelling the bedrock topography surface. It is the data used to produce AGS Map 602, Bedrock Topography of Alberta. Explanatory notes, references, and data sources appear on a supplementary page to accompany Map 602. These notes describe the distribution of physiographic terrain elements of the bedrock surface across Alberta, and the sources and quality of the data that were used to interpolate this surface.

This digital dataset is the compilation of an analysis of the in situ stress regime in several regions of Alberta and northeastern British Columbia conducted by Dr. Sebastian Bell under a contract with the Alberta Geological Survey from 1999 to 2004. The dataset includes both new and previously published estimates for vertical stress gradients, minimum horizontal stress gradients, and stress orientation. Understanding the state of stress in the subsurface has always been important in the development of energy resources. The recent development of unconventional oil sand and low permeability hydrocarbon deposits, waste fluid disposal, greenhouse gas sequestration, and potential geothermal energy extraction all require knowledge of the state of stress to operate safely and economically. A lack of understanding of the state of stress in a given project area has the potential to negatively affect the economics of such projects and may expose operators to increased liabilities. The dataset is associated with Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2009-13, Uranium Potential of Southern Alberta: Petrographic Descriptions of Exposed Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary Rock Formations.

The dataset includes subsurface stratigraphic picks for the top of the Oldman Formation (base of the Dinosaur Park Formation) in the Alberta Plains (Townships 1 to 47, Ranges 1W4 to 5W5) made from wireline geophysical well logs. The dataset supplements Alberta Geological Survey Open File Report 2011-13, which describes the methodology used to make the picks. Well data were screened to detect errors resulting from deviated wells, as well as incorrect ground and kelly bushing elevation data. We used statistical methods to identify local and regional statistical outliers, which we examined individually.

In 2011, for the Alberta Geological Survey Saline Aquifer Mapping Project, we collected and analyzed 40 water samples from oil wells producing from geological units, including the Cardium, Viking, Mannville, Glauconitic, Ellerslie, Nordegg, Banff, Wabamun, Nisku and Leduc, within approximately 200 km of Edmonton, Alberta. We analyzed filtered water samples for pH, density and specific conductance. oxygen, hydrogen and strontium isotopes. and dissolved constituents, including sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, barium, strontium, lithium, chloride, bromide, sulphate, sulphide, silica and inorganic carbon.

Since its inception in 1920, the Alberta Geological Survey (AGS) has drilled several thousand boreholes across the province. Most were drilled only into the unconsolidated sediments overlying the top of bedrock. In 2010, AGS staff began a project to systematically compile all of the borehole log information into a database. This Digital Data product and its companion Open File Report, OFR 2014-06 are the interim results of this initiative. The dataset comprises three tables: Sources.txt, Boreholes.txt and Intervals.txt, as well as metadata. The Sources table gives summary information about the AGS project for which each borehole was drilled. The Boreholes table gives summary information about each borehole, such as location, drilling method, date, and total depth of the hole. The Intervals table gives descriptive geological information about each distinct geological horizon encountered in the borehole, including lithology and colour of the material. The dataset contains the results of geochemical analyses of rock samples from the Bad Heart Formation, Clear Hills region and Smoky River region (northwestern Alberta) collected by Alberta Geological Survey from 2004 to 2007. The data comprise elemental analyses of 325 rock samples, including ooidal ironstone, ooidal sandstone, sandstone, siltstone, shale, Bad Heart rubble and till, and conglomerate.

This dataset has stratigraphic and lithological picks of the upper bedrock and Quaternary geological units in the Athabasca Oil Sands Area extending north from Cold Lake to the Fort McMurray region. The picks were compiled from the mid-1970s to 2006 to construct maps of the subsurface distribution, structure, topography and thickness of near-surface bedrock and Quaternary stratigraphic units. Alberta Geological Survey staff, as well as staff from industry and other government departments, interpreted the data.
